Orientation and Mobility Specialist Services

The Dougherty County School System in Albany, Georgia, requires an orientation and mobility specialist to support its Exceptional Students' Program. The agency needs to ensure that students with visual impairments receive professional instruction to travel safely and independently within school and community environments. The selected provider must comply with all school, district, state, and federal regulations, policies, procedures, and professional ethical standards. The scope of work involves providing direct orientation and mobility instruction, including training students to use assistive devices such as white canes, handheld telescopes, and sensory devices. The specialist must teach environmental awareness, route planning, spatial orientation, sensory interpretation, crowd navigation, and self-advocacy skills. Additionally, the provider must support students in managing mobility-related frustration and collaborate closely with school personnel, teachers, related service providers, and families. Personnel performing the work must maintain the physical capability to safely accompany and support students across various settings, including stairs, hallways, outdoor areas, and community-based instruction sites.
